Minecraft Warden: The Complete Guide
Everything about the Minecraft Warden: where it spawns, its health, its attacks and the best strategies to avoid it or defeat it in survival.
The Warden is the most dangerous mob in Minecraft: 500 health, melee hits of 30 damage on Normal and a sonic boom that ignores armor. It emerges in the Deep Dark biome once a sculk shrieker has been triggered four times. It is blind and hunts by sound: sneak, place wool, distract it with snowballs, and only fight it as a last resort.

The Warden arrived with the 1.19 "The Wild Update" and instantly became the most feared monster in the game. This blind giant guards the depths of the Deep Dark and its ancient cities, where the best underground treasures are hidden. It cannot see you, but it hears everything: every step, every block you place and every chest you open can tell it where you are.
This guide explains how it spawns, what it is made of, how to avoid it and, if you really insist, how to kill it. Everything here applies in singleplayer as well as on a multiplayer Minecraft server, with the commands admins will need as a bonus.

🤔 What is the Warden?
The Warden is a hostile creature nearly 3 blocks tall, made of sculk, that lives underground in the Deep Dark biome. Unlike every other mob, it does not spawn randomly: it rises out of the ground when players make too much noise near a sculk shrieker.
Three things make it unique:
- It is blind. It does not target you by sight but through the vibrations you produce and, at close range, through its sense of smell.
- It is nearly indestructible. With 500 health, it takes more punishment than any boss.
- It is not meant to be killed. Its only drop is a sculk catalyst. Mojang designed it as an obstacle to work around, not as a challenge to overcome.
You will know it is there before you see it: the ground shakes, a deep heartbeat echoes and your screen dims under the Darkness effect.
🧭 Where to find the Warden (Deep Dark, ancient cities)
The Deep Dark biome
The Deep Dark generates deep underground, most often beneath mountains, at very low altitudes. You will recognise it by its dark blue sculk blocks, sculk veins, sculk sensors and sculk shriekers. You go down there for the ancient cities, huge ruins centred around Y = -52. Their chests hold items found nowhere else: the Swift Sneak enchantment for boots, the echo shards used to craft the recovery compass, and the fragments of music disc 5.
How the Warden spawns
The Warden has no spawn rate. Everything goes through the sculk shriekers that generate naturally in the biome:
- A sculk sensor picks up a vibration (footsteps, a broken block, an opened chest, a landing projectile...) and activates the nearby shrieker.
- Each shriek raises your warning level by one. A shrieker only counts one shriek every 10 seconds or so, and every shriek hits you with the Darkness effect.
- At the fourth level, a Warden emerges from the ground next to the shrieker.
- The warning level drops by one every 10 minutes without a new shriek.
Two important details: a shrieker will not summon a Warden if one is already nearby, and the shriekers you place yourself in survival are harmless. Only naturally generated shriekers (or ones created by command with the can_summon tag) can call it.
Breaking sculk shriekers with a pickaxe or by hand destroys them without making them shriek. In an ancient city, taking the shriekers out one by one, away from the sensors, remains the safest way to loot in peace.
📊 Warden stats
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 500 (250 hearts) |
| Size | about 2.9 blocks tall, 0.9 blocks wide |
| Melee damage | 16 on Easy, 30 on Normal, 45 on Hard |
| Sonic boom (ranged attack) | 6 on Easy, 10 on Normal, 15 on Hard, ignores armor and shields |
| Darkness effect | every player within 20 blocks, 13 seconds, refreshed regularly |
| Detection | vibrations and smell, no eyesight |
| Drops | 1 sculk catalyst, 5 experience points |
| Despawn | burrows away after 60 seconds without detecting anything |
| Spawning | natural sculk shrieker triggered 4 times, Deep Dark biome |
Some numbers speak for themselves. On Hard, a single punch deals 45 damage: more than a player's 20 health points, armor or not. The sonic boom goes straight through your defences: netherite armor, Protection enchantments and shields do not reduce it. It knocks you back and reaches around 15 blocks horizontally, a little more vertically. Standing on a pillar is therefore no guarantee of safety.
🤫 How to avoid the Warden
Dealing with the Warden comes down to one rule: no vibration, no Warden. Here are the habits that work.
Before it shows up
- Sneak everywhere. Sneaking footsteps produce no vibration at all. That is the whole point of the Swift Sneak enchantment, which makes sneaking almost as fast as walking.
- Place wool. Wool blocks block vibrations. Surround a sculk sensor with wool, or put wool between you and it, so it picks up nothing.
- Break nothing you do not need. Mining, placing a block, opening a chest or throwing a projectile that lands are all vibrations. Grab your loot calmly and close chests quietly while sneaking.
- Stay out of water and lava. Entering or leaving a liquid also creates a vibration.
- Neutralise the shriekers. A destroyed shrieker cannot shriek. Approach while sneaking and break it.
Once it is there
- Freeze. Standing still while sneaking, you emit nothing. It will sniff around for a while and move on; after 60 seconds without a detection it burrows away and despawns.
- Distract it with snowballs, eggs or arrows. A projectile landing far from you creates a vibration the Warden will go and investigate. Throw them in the opposite direction from your exit.
- Keep your distance. Within 20 blocks the Darkness effect blinds you; within about 15 blocks it can fire its sonic boom. Back off, sneaking, before you reach those ranges.
- Do not hit it. Every hit makes it angrier, and its anger focuses first on whoever struck it.
Good preparation matters too: bring wool, snowballs, a Night Vision potion (it does not cancel Darkness but helps between waves) and above all a Totem of Undying in your off hand.
💀 How to kill the Warden
Let's be honest: killing the Warden is only worth it for the challenge or for bragging rights. The loot is one sculk catalyst. If you still want to take it on, here is what works best in survival.
The minimum gear
- Full netherite armor with Protection IV on every piece and a Totem of Undying in your off hand.
- A netherite sword with Sharpness V, or an axe with the same enchantment, plus a Power V bow and a good stock of arrows.
- Potions of Strength II and Regeneration, Resistance from a Potion of the Turtle Master or an enchanted golden apple, and a few enchanted golden apples for emergencies.
- Blocks that are quick to place and some TNT: explosions remain one of the best ways to take a big chunk of its health at once.
Strategies that work
- Prepare the arena. Face the Warden in an open area, away from sensors and extra shriekers, so a second one cannot join in.
- Hit, back off, repeat. The Warden is almost as fast as a sprinting player. Land one or two hits, then retreat so you never take a full punch.
- Use explosions. Primed TNT under its feet, or beds in the Nether or the End if you bring it there by command, deal massive damage, but you must stay clear of the sonic boom.
- Rely on potions. Resistance reduces the sonic boom, unlike armor. Combined with Regeneration and the totem, it gives you a real margin for error.
- Never fight it in total darkness. Under the Darkness effect, keep landmarks: torches placed in advance, a light block, walls.
At 500 health, expect more than 60 hits from a Sharpness V sword without criticals. Most players rightly prefer to let the Warden burrow away and come back to loot the ancient city in silence.
🧰 The Warden on your server
On a server, the Warden quickly becomes a hot topic: some players want to clear ancient cities, others want to stage the fight of the century. A few commands and settings will make your life easier as an admin (operator status required):
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
/locate biome minecraft:deep_dark | Gives the coordinates of the nearest Deep Dark |
/locate structure minecraft:ancient_city | Gives the coordinates of the nearest ancient city |
/summon minecraft:warden | Spawns a Warden at your position, for an event or a test |
/kill @e[type=minecraft:warden] | Removes every loaded Warden, for example after an event |
/gamerule keepInventory true | Stops your players from losing their gear when they die to it |
/difficulty easy | Brings its punches down to 16 damage for beginner players |
The difficulty can also be set permanently in the server.properties file (difficulty=normal) or from your panel console. The Warden follows the same rules on Bedrock if your community plays on console or mobile. For the full list of admin commands, see our guide to Minecraft Java commands.
