How to Install Oxide (or Carbon) and Rust Plugins
Install Oxide (uMod) or Carbon on your Rust server, add plugins, set permissions and keep everything working after the monthly force wipe.
Pick one framework, Oxide (uMod) or Carbon, extract its archive into the root of the stopped server, start it: the oxide folder appears. A plugin is a .cs file dropped into oxide/plugins, it loads on its own; its settings live in oxide/config. Permissions are managed with oxide.group, oxide.grant and oxide.usergroup. After every Rust update, reinstall Oxide. On a Rust server at LordHosting, everything is uploaded from the panel's file manager.
Plugins turn a generic Rust server into one players come back to every wipe. Here's how to install a modding framework, add plugins and manage permissions. If your server doesn't exist yet, start with How to host a Rust server.
⚙️ Oxide vs. Carbon
| Oxide (uMod) | Carbon | |
|---|---|---|
| History | The original framework | Newer |
| Plugins | Thousands on uMod | Compatible with most Oxide plugins |
| Strength | Widespread, well documented | Built with performance in mind |
Both work well. Pick one: they can't run together.
⚙️ Installing Oxide
- Stop the server.
- Download the Oxide build for Rust from uMod.
- Extract it into the server root, overwriting existing files.
- Start the server. An
oxidefolder appears:oxide/plugins: plugins (.cs);oxide/config: plugin settings;oxide/data: plugin data.
After every Rust update, especially the monthly force wipe, install the latest Oxide build, or plugins stop loading. It's the number one cause of "my plugins disappeared" on wipe day.
On a hosted Rust server at LordHosting, the archive is extracted from the panel's file manager with the server stopped, and the oxide folder appears on restart.
⚙️ Adding a plugin
- Download the plugin's
.csfile (uMod, Codefling, Lone.Design and others). - Drop it into
oxide/plugins. It loads automatically, no restart needed. - Edit its config in
oxide/config/PluginName.json, then reload it:
oxide.reload PluginName
⚙️ Most popular plugins
| Plugin | Use |
|---|---|
| Gather Manager | Boosts gather rates (2x, 5x servers) |
| Kits | Starter or VIP kits |
| NTeleportation | Home and player-to-player teleport |
| Clans | Clans and alliances |
| Better Chat | Chat colors and titles |
| Remover Tool | Remove your own buildings |
| TruePVE | PvE server: blocks player damage |
Test every plugin before wipe day: a misconfigured plugin can crash the server when it's busiest.
⚙️ Permissions
Oxide uses groups and permissions:
oxide.group add vip
oxide.grant group vip kits.vip
oxide.usergroup add PlayerName vip
oxide.show perms
These are plugin permissions. Server admin rights (kick, ban, teleport) are a separate system, covered in Rust console and admin commands.
⚙️ Ready-to-paste configuration
The commands to run once in the console for a server with one admin, one moderator and a VIP group entitled to a kit and teleport. Replace the IDs at the top.
// Replace: the SteamID64 and names of the admin and the moderator
ownerid 76561198000000001 "Admin" "owner"
moderatorid 76561198000000002 "Mod" "moderator"
server.writecfg
// VIP group and its permissions (Kits and NTeleportation plugins)
oxide.group add vip
oxide.grant group vip kits.vip
oxide.grant group vip nteleportation.home
oxide.grant group vip nteleportation.tpr
// Basic permissions for everyone
oxide.grant group default kits.default
oxide.grant group default nteleportation.home
// Add a player to the VIP group
oxide.usergroup add 76561198000000003 vip
// Check
oxide.show perms
oxide.show groups
✅ Conclusion
One framework, .cs files in oxide/plugins, settings in oxide/config and permissions by group: that's the whole logic of Oxide. The rule that avoids most problems is to reinstall Oxide after every Rust update and to test every plugin before wipe day.
Our Rust servers have the RAM to run dozens of plugins, with Oxide or Carbon uploaded from the panel's file manager and the console available in your browser.
