Satisfactory Mods: How to Use Satisfactory Mod Manager
How to install Satisfactory mods with Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM), for single player and dedicated servers. Compatibility, updates and popular mods.
Satisfactory mods install with Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM), downloaded from ficsit.app. Single player: create a profile, install the mods, launch the game from SMM. Dedicated server: add the server in SMM (local path or SFTP for a hosted server), install the same mods, restart. Players must have the same mods as the server. Back up your save before every change. On a LordHosting Satisfactory server, the panel's SFTP access lets SMM install mods directly.
Mods add new buildings, logistics, construction tools and UI improvements. The community's standard way to install them is Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM), which handles dependencies and updates for you. This guide covers single player and dedicated servers; if your server doesn't exist yet, start with How to make a Satisfactory dedicated server.
⚙️ Before You Install Mods
- Mods are published on ficsit.app, the community repository.
- SMM installs dependencies automatically, including the Satisfactory Mod Loader (SML).
- After a major game update, mods may break until they're updated.
- Back up your save before adding or removing a mod: a save that uses modded items can break if you remove the mod.
A removed mod doesn't disappear cleanly from a save that used it. The safety copy takes a few seconds: see where your saves are.
⚙️ Installing Mods for Single Player
- Download Satisfactory Mod Manager (official link on ficsit.app).
- Launch it: it detects your Steam or Epic install.
- Create a profile (for example "Friends game").
- Search for mods and click "Install".
- Launch the game from SMM.
A profile is a list of mods. You can have several, one per save, and export them to share with your friends.
⚙️ Installing Mods on a Dedicated Server
- In SMM, add your server in server management: local path, or SFTP/FTP connection for a hosted server.
- Select the server and install the same mods as your profile.
- Restart the server.
- Every player needs the same mods as the server (share your SMM profile).
Only server-compatible mods work on a dedicated server: each mod's page on ficsit.app shows its compatibility.
On a Satisfactory server hosted by LordHosting, the SFTP credentials are in the panel: address, port, username and password, to paste into SMM's add-server window. Restarting is one click from the panel.
⚙️ Popular Mod Types
| Category | Examples of what you'll find |
|---|---|
| UI | More machine info, production calculators |
| Building | Placement tools, new structural pieces |
| Logistics | New belts, storage, flow control |
| Quality of life | Inventory slots, faster movement |
| Content | New machines, recipes, full production chains |
Prefer mods updated for your game version, and test them on a copy of your save before adding them to the server.
⚙️ Updating and Removing Mods
- Update: SMM flags mods with a new version. Update the profile, then the server, then tell your players: a version gap between the server and a player blocks the connection.
- Removal: disable the mod in the profile and on the server, restart, then load the save. If it refuses to load, put the mod back and load the safety copy.
⚙️ Ready-to-paste configuration
The SMM profile file to share with your players is exportable from SMM (Profile, Export). For a hosted server, here is the form to fill in SMM's "Add server" window, SFTP tab, with the values from the panel:
Connection type : SFTP
Host : SERVER_ADDRESS
Port : SFTP_PORT
Username : SFTP_USER
Password : SFTP_PASSWORD
Path : / (server root, the folder that contains FactoryGame and Engine)
Once the server is added, tick the same mods as in your profile, click Install, then restart the server from the panel.
✅ Conclusion
SMM does the heavy lifting: dependencies, loader, updates. Your job comes down to three rules: back up before modding, install only server-compatible mods, and keep the server and the players on the same versions. For backups, our guide Satisfactory save file location shows where the files are.
On our Satisfactory servers, the panel's SFTP access lets SMM install your mods directly on the server, with enough RAM for heavy content packs.
